Dr. Nick Pace became a middle and high school principal at a small school in Iowa (USA) in 2000, when expectations for principals were increasingly rapidly. In addition to the traditional duties of budge, scheduling, and student discipline., stakeholders and state and federal departments of education began calling for principals to lead instruction, ensure effective professional learning for teachers, and lead entire learning communities.
At the same time, many criticized the programs that prepare principals. Levine (2005, p.25) noted that many programs at well-known universities were “inadequate to appalling.” Darling-Hammond, LaPointe, Meyerson, Orr and Cohen (2007) cite a Public Agenda survey that revealed 8 of 10 superintendents and nearly as many principals felt that university educational leadership programs were out of touch with the reality in today’s schools. Brock and Grady (2004, p. xi) described many principals as having “culture shock and anxiety” at their lack of effective preparation.
Dr. Pace’s work has sought to create tools for more effectively and authentically prepare principals for the challenges they will face. The Principal’s Hot Seat: Observing Real-World Dilemmas (2011) features video footage of future principals responding to difficult and hostile conversations in an authentic role play. His two most recent books, Reality Calling (2013) and Seeking Balance (2014) tell the story of a fictional high school principal in his first year on the job.
Crafted from his own experiences as a principal, imagination, and stories shared by other school administrators, the books provide future school leaders with an opportunity to apply research, classroom theory, and national school leadership standards. Dr. Pace will outline the books and how they are used in courses in American universities.
嘉宾简介
Dr. Nick Pace serves as Professor and Chair of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Department of Educational Administration. In this role, he provides leadership and support for 14 faculty members, eight academic programs, and nearly 400 graduate students. He joined UNL after 17 years as a faculty member and administrator in teacher education and educational leadership at the University of Northern Iowa. Prior to his work in higher education, Dr. Pace served as a social worker, teacher, coach, and principal.
Dr. Pace’s scholarly focus has been on preparing and sustaining school principals. He is the author of four books on the principalship, including Reality Calling (2013) and Seeking Balance (2014), which are fictional accounts of the events in a principal’s first year on the job. He is also the author of The Principal’s Hot Seat: Observing Real-World Dilemmas, which features video footage of future principals deescalating difficult conversations. He has also published in Educational Leadership Review, American School Board Journal and the Journal of Advanced Academics. Current interests include future principal pipelines, mindfulness and ways school leaders maintain balance in their lives. He is also working on a second edition of The Principal’s Hot Seat text.
Dr. Pace was inducted to the Iowa Academy of Education in 2016, received the UNI College of Education Award for Outstanding Scholarship and the Diversity Matters Award, both in 2012, and was presented the Iowa Friend of Civil Rights Award in 2010.
