Prof. Michel A Peters and Prof. Tina Besley Gave a Report in Department of Education

At 9:00a.m., October 19, Prof. Michael A Peters and Prof. Tina Besley who came from the University of Waikato were invited by the Department of Education and The National Institute of Schooling Reform and Development to give a report. The topic was Education in The Age of Finance Culture. 


The report of Prof. Peters focused on the post-crisis era since international financial crisis in 2008. Through the exploration of financial reforms, he researched its impact on education. He discussed the rapid expansion of financial capital and its relation with substantial economy. In his opinion, financialization (capitalization) has been a culture change in ideology because it has influenced all policies.

He also analyzed the Chinese financial institutions from an international perspective, especially the development from piaohao (票號), qianzhuang (錢莊) to modern consumer banking system, and the payment transform from paper currency, credit card to mobile phone. Meanwhile, Prof. Peters presented his research about Chinese customers, middle class and discretionary spending.


About the financial impact on education, Prof. Peters thought there are some new situation in education. Education will go forward to openness, cooperation and integration, even visualization and virtualization. In the context of informatization and postmodernism, knowledge production and consumption have a great change, such as online courses and borderless education.


In the free discussion, two professors and audiences talked over some new topics, included the change of learning style and its challenge for teachers, the intelligence times and its impact on education.
