Academic Week Series II | Report by Professor Nicholas C. Burbules, University of Illinois, Champaign, and outline of Dr. Liu Wei's preparation and application for studying in the United States

On June 4, 2019, at 13:30 p.m., the second event of the International Academic Week of the Collgeg of Education, University of Illinois, Champaign, Department of Education, East China Normal University was held in Room 913 of the Arts Building. Professor Nicholas C. Burbules of Champaign University presented a report entitled Cross Cultural Perspectives on the Ethics of Teaching. Dr. Liu Wei gave a lecture on Preparation and application for studying in the United States. Teachers such as Bu Yuhua, Peng Xinqiang, Li Lin, Wang Zhankui, Liu Shiqing, Wang Lijia of the Ministry of Education and more than 20 Chinese and American graduate students participated in the activity, which was chaired by Mr. Bu Yuhua.

In his report, Professor Burbules introduced the two major institutions that set standards for teachers'ethics in the United States, the National Education Association (NEA) and the Association of American Educators (AAE), and explained the relationship between ethics and ethical behavior. He believed that norms needed to be examined in specific contexts. Different subjects show different ethical behaviors and moral choices in different situations. Subsequently, he highlighted the provisions of China, NEA and AAE on the moral responsibilities and obligations of the state or collective, ethical behavior, justice and fairness, work, students, colleagues, families and knowledge, and found the similarities and differences between China and the United States in terms of teachers'moral norms.

In the subsequent interactive link, the participants had extensive exchanges on the formulation and connotation of teachers'ethical standards, the treatment and evaluation of ethical issues in educational practice, the role and limitations of teachers' ethical standards, and teachers'ethical standards and assessment in different situations in China and the United States.

Next, Dr. Liu Wei shared the preparation and application for studying in the United States. First, she introduced the materials needed to prepare for studying in the United States, and especially pointed out that American professors attach great importance to the individual academic goals of scholars. Specifically, in the application process, learners should select schools, specialties and professors according to their own research basis. As for the requirement of English achievement, which is of general concern to all, Dr. Liu said that different schools and majors have different requirements for English and can pass the examination by applying for oral interview with professors.

Subsequently, on-site teachers and students raised questions about the cost of studying abroad, accommodation problems, post-doctoral applications and security issues for different projects. Through this lecture, the students learned the basic process and material preparation for studying in the United States, and laid the foundation for future practical applications.
