Students of the Department of Education Can Take Classes of International Masters, How Could They Do That?

Talents cultivating is always the important work of our department. Besides the innovation of cultivating mode, in recent years, Department of Education speeds up international exploration in the curriculum provision of postgraduate. We invite internationally recognized scholars to share their research by short term course, workshop and report, which pays attention to broaden postgraduates’ vision of international academic frontier and provide guidance of education research theory.

Education Frontier Research

In this series, we invited international scholars to share their latest research achievement, such as Prof. Michael Peters, who comes from the University of Waikato, offered two short term courses: Wittgenstein and Education, Foucault and Education. Prof. Peters prepared abundant learning material to help students preview and introduced their educational thoughts in different themes and aspects. The students who take these courses are delighted for helping them broaden philosophical vision in education research.


Prof. Ni Yongmei, who comes from the University of Utah, offered the short-term course What is Data-based Decision Making? Centered on the guiding principle, process description, assessment and school improvement of Data Driven Decision Making, Prof. Ni gave a detailed explanation. She prepared very well, and students were active. Their communication was very harmonious. According to our plan, the short-term course is incorporated into the curriculum system of postgraduate which observing credits.


Besides, we invited Mr. Lan Westbury, who is the professor of University of Illinois, the winner of Lifetime Achievement Award of American Educational Association, the chief editor of Curriculum Research, to give a report about curriculum research front; the famous English education history researcher Prof. Gary McCulloch to report the New Direction of Education History Research; Prof. Deng Zongyi from Nanyang Technological University to explain the success of Singapore education; Prof. Geoff Riordan from University of Canberra to present the education of Australia; Prof. Zheng Binyao from Kennesaw State University to give a report Discussion and Comparation of Elementary Educational Reform in China and America; Prof. Alexander W. Cappelen from the Equity Laboratory of Economics School in Norway and Prof. Tom Are Trippestad from University of Applied Sciences in West Norway to give a report about educational fairness.


In general, the series of Education Frontier Research not only relates to the trend of educational policy research, also includes the integration of disciplines; both the cooperation of educational focal points like educational fairness, there are also the analysis of western education masters; nor merely the comparation of China and West in specific area, more than explanation of international successful experiences. 

Educational Research Method

In this series, we invited international scholars to share their specialty, for example, Prof. Wang Ting from University of Canberra offered the course Educational Research Method and Writing Norms of English Academic Paper. The course sustained a semester, and Prof. Wang systematically settled the methods of educational research. On this basis, she explained the writing norms of English academic paper. The content of course combined theory and practice which benefited students a lot.


Prof. Shen Jianping settled a short-term course How to Do Qualitative Research which used typical cases of qualitative research to introduce research design and technology of coding and analysis in qualitative data. The students who took this course generally expressed their appreciation of Prof. Sheng’s technical analysis ability, and they had an overall understanding in the effect of technology in educational research. According to our plan, the short-term course is incorporated into the curriculum system of postgraduate which observing credits.


Besides, we invited Prof. Christoph Wulf from Germany's Free University of Berlin to carried out “Educational Research Method Workshop”; Prof. Michael Connelly from Ontario Education Institute, University of Toronto, the leading figure of international education narrative research to held subject workshop; Prof. Sharon Todd from Department of education, Menus university, Ireland to carry out a workshop Writing and Publishing of English Academic Paper; Prof. Xu Jianzhong from Mississippi State University to give a subject report about educational research method.


In general, the series of educational research method attached important to the cross and combination of qualitative and quantitative research, and the specific application of research method to deepen students’ understanding of research method in inspiration, and to cultivate the ability of thinking and solving problems.

In recent years, Department of Education actively promote and strengthen international development strategies. Teachers and students walking out, and international courses bringing in are the important manifestations. In the future, we will continue to explore educational internationalization and develop the internationalization of teaching, academic researching and talents cultivation.
