4. Credit and Curriculum
(1) Course and Credit
The course schedule for doctoral students includes common course, elementary course and specialized course. The common course includes common compulsory course and common optional course, such as Political Theory, Foreign Language, etc. The elementary course is required. The specialized course includes major compulsory courses which are established by subject group and major optional courses which indicated research direction. Credits of elementary course and specialized course (compulsory) should be no less than 5. The specialized course (optional) should be no less than 1 and the credits should be no less than 2. The credits of doctoral courses should be no less than 15.

5. Research Achievements Requirement
The research achievements during the doctor degree should meet one of the following conditions: (1) publish a paper on the journals of SSCI or A&HCI as doctor being the first author or supervisor being the first author and doctor being the second author and ECNU as the unit of first author; (2) publish a paper on the authoritative journals of liberal arts as doctor being the first author or supervisor being the first author and doctor being the second author and ECNU as the unit of first author; (3) publish two papers in the journals of CSSCI (including extended edition) as doctor being the first author and ECNU as the unit of first author.
Doctoral candidates are supposed to apply for degree after their research achievements meet requirement.
(1) Annual report. At the end of every academic year, student should report to supervisor and steering group about the academic process of the year. The supervisor and department will sign and put on record in graduate college.
(2) Qualification text. Doctoral student of master-doctor continuous study should attend the qualification text of doctoral candidate at the end of curriculum, generally from the end of third semester to the beginning of fourth semester.
(3) Proposal evaluation. Doctoral students should earn all credits in the first semester and finish the PhD dissertation proposal. Department and graduate college will hold an evaluation at the beginning of third semester.
(4) Defense qualification examination. Graduates of autumn should attend the defense qualification examination before 10th April, and graduates of spring are before 31st October. The content includes credits examination, academic products examination, academic participation examination, etc.
(5) Elimination mechanism. Doctoral student who has harmful trends in political and moral behavior, poor academic performance and low research ability will be advised to repeat.
7. Dissertation Requirement
(1) Proposal elements. The dissertation proposal should include: 1) explain the reason of topic selection; 2) clearly express the objective and significance; 3) systemically and clearly introduce the process and trends of academic research domestic and overseas; 4) research design; 5) research stage and plan; 6) innovation point and key problem; 7) research content; 8) difficulties, questions and problems of the research; 9) references.
(2) Proposal evaluation and demonstration. Supervisor and 3-5 professors in relevant research field will evaluate and demonstrate the proposal. They will analyze and assess the research value and feasibility. If the proposal has one of the following situation, it should be reformed: 1) non-valued or almost non-valued thesis; 2) simply repeat others’ research and has no innovation or almost has no innovation; 3) research design is rough, exists serious defect or can’t be operated.
(3) Dissertation defense qualification. 1) No illegal or disciplinary record and pass the political examine; 2) meet the requirement of this program 3) no plagiary or infringement; 4) the published article didn’t have serious mistakes or the translation didn’t distort original obviously; 5) dissertation passes the peer review.
(4) Dissertation requirement. 1) the topic has theoretical and practical significance; 2) research theme is clear and specific, possessing consciousness of problems; 3) be familiar with the relevant academic background, master the research frontier trends and understand the problems solved by previous researchers and the problems left; 4) having a strict logic and structure and being able to discuss the problem completely and systematically; 5) the dissertation can reflect that the doctor masters the solid and expanded basic theory and systematic professional knowledge; 6) the dissertation has innovative research results.
(5) Academic standard. 1) respect others outcomes and be serious to the documents; 2) finish the dissertation independently with the guidance of supervisor; 3) express the research outcomes practically and realistically; 4) language should be refining and the key words should be appropriate; 5) abstract should conform to the text and protrudes new opinions and innovative outcomes; 6) language should conform to modern standard Chinese without ill-formed sentences; 7) wrongly written characters, wrong punctuation and spelling mistakes should be controlled under five over ten thousand ( calculated according to the length).
(6) Pre-defense. Doctoral students who want to apply for dissertation defense should pass the pre-defense which will be organized by the institution and department. They will organize supervisor and relevant professors to listen to the applicant’s dissertation process, give advice and determine whether the applicant can attend the defense in time.
