1. Cultivating Objective

(1) To fully master Marxism, Mao Zedong Thought and socialism theory system with Chinese characteristics, to implement Scientific Development Concept deeply, to love our motherland, to abide by laws and regulations, to study rigorously, to behave morally, to have a strong sense of devotion and dedication and to contribute actively for socialist modern construction.

(2) To comprehensively know the developing processes and latest achievements of educational theories at home and abroad, to accurately understand the major Chinese and foreign themes and basic clues in the evolutions of educational thoughts and in the changes of educational systems and in the promotion of educational practice;

(3) To clearly know the methodology of scientific research in education, to skillfully apply the theories and methods of educational historiography to evaluate the historical facts of Chinese and foreign education, to explore the developing laws of Educational History according to the needs of the reality of education reform and to summarize the experience and lessons of the development of Educational History.

(4) To possess a strong ability to independently engage in research on educational theory to be qualified for the teaching, scientific research and education management of this discipline and the related specialties.

4. Credit and Curriculum

(1) Course and Credit

The course schedule for doctoral students includes common course, elementary course and specialized course. The common course includes common compulsory course and common optional course, such as Political Theory, Foreign Language, etc. The elementary course is required. The specialized course includes major compulsory courses which are established by subject group and major optional courses which indicated research direction. Credits of elementary course and specialized course (compulsory) should be no less than 5. The specialized course (optional) should be no less than 1 and the credits should be no less than 2. The credits of doctoral courses should be no less than 15.

Doctoral students may be asked by mentors to supple some courses according to the requirements of this major and their postgraduate course achievements.

5. Research Achievements Requirement

(1) Scientific research training

Scientific research training and creativity are important for developing doctoral students of History of Education. Doctoral students are encouraged to participate in the tutor's research projects, independently choose and carry out scientific research, apply for various Scientific Research Funds and other things in order to enhance their own scientific literacy and ability.

(2) Academic events

Doctoral students have to participate in academic discussions or academic reports for at least 30 times during their learning periods. Doctoral students themselves have to publish more than 2 academic reports.

(3) The publication of scientific research results

Doctoral students are guided and encouraged to write and publish academic papers according to the annual assessment and the assessment of thesis defense qualification.

During the learning period, the academic papers published by doctoral students should meet one of the following conditions:

(1) He or she is the first writer, or while the mentor is the first writer, he or she is the second writer, East China Normal University as First author affiliation, one academic paper should be published in SSCI and A&HCI Periodicals

(2) He or she is the first writer, or while the mentor is the first writer, he or she is the second writer, East China Normal University as First author affiliation,

One academic paper should be published in authoritative periodicals of first class subjects of Liberal Arts.

(3) He or she is the first writer, East China Normal University as First author affiliation, two academic papers in the CSSCI Journal (including the Extended Edition).

Only if the published scientific research results reach the required line during the learning period. Doctoral students are allowed to apply for the degree.

6. Academic Assessment

(1) Annual report

At the end of every year, doctoral students present that year’s progress of study and research to mentors and the coaching group. The presentation will be recorded by Graduate School after the views and remarks are signed by the student’s tutors and the department.

(2) The qualification examination

Postgraduates, who want to get successive study for master and doctorate degrees, will take the qualification examination for PhD candidates after concluding the learning courses, which generally is between the end of the third term and the beginning of the fourth term.

(3) Assessment of thesis proposal

Doctoral students have to get required credits in the first year and complete the proposal of dissertations. The assessment will be carried out at the beginning of the third term by the department, the faculty and Graduate School.

(4) The qualification evaluation of thesis defense

Doctoral students who want to graduate in the autumn have to be evaluated for the qualification of thesis defense before April 10 every year, and who want to graduate in the autumn have to be evaluated for the qualification of thesis defense before October 31. The specific date of evaluation is subject to notification. The qualification evaluation of doctoral students’ thesis defense mainly contains assessment of course work and credits, assessment of scientific research results and assessment of the participation of academic activities.

7. Dissertation Requirement

A doctoral dissertation of Educational History is a comprehensive training of scientific research for doctoral students, is an important part of developing their ability to analyze and solve problems by comprehensively using knowledge of Educational History and is one of the important bases to measure whether they can obtain a doctorate degree.

A doctoral dissertation of Educational History should reflect the frontier and creativity in selecting topics and writing, should be completed independently by the doctoral students under the guidance of tutors, and should indicate that the doctoral students have mastered the extensive knowledge and profound professional knowledge of Education History.

For contents, basic requirements of doctoral dissertations of Educational History contains:

(1) There is theoretical and practical significance in the selected topic;

(2) The research topic must be clear and specific with strong awareness of the solving problems;

(3) The dissertation must be familiar with the academic background related to the dissertation, and know the frontier research trends related to the dissertation, and clarify what problems the predecessors have solved and what problems have been left;

(4) The paper does not miss important documents;

(5) There is a strict logical structure that can make a complete and systematic discussion of the problem.

(6) The dissertation can indicate that the author has mastered relatively solid basic theory and systematic expertise;

(7) The dissertation has new ideas or discoveries.

For the norms of writing, basic requirements of doctoral dissertations of Educational History are as follows:

(1) The achievements of other people should be respected and literature should be treated seriously;

(2) The dissertation should be dependently and completely under the mentor’s guidance;

(3) One’s research results should be expressed in a realistic way;

(4) The words should be concise, and the key words should be appropriate;

(5) The abstract should be consistent with the main text, and can highlight new insights or innovative achievements of the dissertation;

(6) The words should conform to the modern Chinese standards and sentences should be fluent, and expressions should be rigid;

Thesis pre-defense:

Doctoral students that are to apply for dissertation defense have to pass Thesis pre-defense organized by the department. The relevant professional teachers, mentors and members of the coaching group will be asked by the department to hear the progress of the dissertations the results obtained reported by the applicants, to put forward advice and suggestions for further revising and perfecting the dissertations and to make sure if the applicants can participate in the defense as scheduled.
