1. Cultivating Objectives

The program focuses on cultivating high-level talents who have a broad vision, social and cultural basis for educational research and can pay attention to the relationship between education and social, cultural, political, economic and their changes in the contemporary world, in order to adapt to the needs of interdisciplinary research on education and the development of educational structure.

The cultivating objectives of the subject require students to analyze problems by using the basic theoretical system of the basic point of view of Marx doctrine, Mao Zedong thought and the theory system of socialism with Chinese characteristics. After graduation, students have a deep foundation of educational theory, humanities and social disciplines and widen their academic horizons. Also, they can master the research methods of modern social science systematically and be familiar with relevant technical methods. Besides, they can grasp the development processes and latest developments of international and domestic education and culture research. What’s more, students can develop innovative consciousness, innovative desire and innovative passion in the frontier research of this discipline. They will be down-to-earth, do not fear difficulties, and have the rigorous and pragmatic style of learning. Finally, students can master a foreign language skillfully. Students can behave well and have good physical and mental health and they can engaged in research, teaching and consulting in related fields independently.

2. Cultivating Method and Duration

(1) Cultivating Method

A combination of tutors' guidance and tutor group’s guidance training is carried out. We encourage and promote interdisciplinary and cross professional training mode, under the premise of need and possibility, we can also support joint training with fellow scholars or academics at home and abroad. The doctorial students are encouraged to go abroad for a stage study in a high level university during the period of studying.

(2) Duration

4 years, no more than 6 years.

3.Research Concentrations

(1) Educational Sociology  

From the perspective of sociology and the use of sociological theories and methods to study all kinds of educational problems. It includes macro-level—education system, social difference and educational equality, education and social mobility and stratification, educational organization and effectiveness, social motivation of school development at middle-level, curriculum sociology and classroom analysis at micro-level.

(2) Research on education and culture

It uses theories and methods such as anthropology, cultural research and narrative analysis to study all kinds of educational problems. For example, the cultural significance of school building and environment at the appliance level, the cultural and educational form, the formation of teacher culture, and the reconstruction of school culture at the system level, the culture and the thinking of the learners, the culture and the presentation of knowledge of the subject at the psychological level, etc.  

4. Credit and Curriculum

(1) Course and Credit

The course schedule for doctoral students includes common course, elementary course and specialized course. The common course includes common compulsory course and common optional course, such as Political Theory, Foreign Language, etc. The elementary course is required. The specialized course includes major compulsory courses which are established by subject group and major optional courses which indicated research direction. Credits of elementary course and specialized course (compulsory) should be no less than 5. The specialized course (optional) should be no less than 1 and the credits should be no less than 2. The credits of doctoral courses should be no less than 15.

This major encourages students to have interdisciplinary courses. If a graduate student has not completed a elementary course of a lower level, he/she should take a 1-2 elementary degree course as a supplement, but those credits cannot replace the course credits for a degree.

The tutor can also ask students to have some prerequisite courses as make-up courses based on professional training needs and the courses which the doctorial students have taken.

This major attaches great importance to the training of graduate students' scientific research training and scientific research ability, and the relevant requirements have been clearly defined in this training program. Besides, this major encourages graduate students to participate in scientific research projects and academic exchanges at home and abroad, etc. Also it encourages graduate students to actively apply for various scientific research projects and funds, under the guidance of the tutor, to enter the research field related the subject as soon as possible.

5. Research Achievements Requirement

One of the following conditions must be satisfied by the research results published by the doctorial students during the period of studying: (1) publish 1 academic paper in SSCI and A&HCI journals and he/she must be the first author or his/her tutor is the first author and his/her own is the second author, East China Normal University is the first author unit.(2) publish 1 academic paper in the academic and authoritative journals of the Liberal Arts and he/she must be the first author or his/her tutor is the first author and his/her own is the second author, East China Normal University is the first author unit. (3) publish 2 academic papers in the CSSCI Journals (including the Extended Edition) and he/she must be the first author, East China Normal University is the first author unit.

Doctoral candidates are supposed to apply for degree after their research achievements meet requirement.

6. Academic assessment

(1) Curriculum assessment  

It includes taking exams or handing in papers. Compulsory courses must have exams, optional courses need to have exams or handing in papers at the end of the semester. The scores of the examination are scored according to the 100 percentage system or the A/B/C such grade system. In principle, degree courses are often arranged in the first school year, and the test must be completed before students start their doctoral thesis proposal writing.  

(2) Annual report

At the end of each academic year, doctorial students should report their learning and research progress to their tutors and guidance teams, and the departments and instructors must sign their opinions before reporting to the graduate school for recording.

(3) Basic literature reading ability assessment  

The doctorial students should master the basic literature involved in the field of research. At the end of the first school year, they should be examined by the department.

(4) Check thesis proposal

After finishing the required credits, doctorial students need to complete their thesis proposal  

(5) Check qualifications of defense

Students who graduate in fall semester must have their defense qualifications checked before April 10th each year, those who graduate in spring semester must each year have their defense qualifications checked before October 31st. The qualification audit of doctorial students' thesis defense mainly includes checking the course study and credits, scientific research results, and the participation of academic activities.

7. Dissertation Requirement

(1) Topic selection of thesis

Before writing a thesis, a graduate student must take a careful investigation and study, consult massive documents and materials, understand the history, current situation and development trend of the research direction, and determine his thesis topic based on this.

The topic selection of doctoral dissertation should be at the forefront of disciplines, which is groundbreaking and of great academic value and practical significance, the thesis should have original ideas on the subject.

(2) Thesis proposal

After the interim assessment, there will be a thesis demonstration report meeting. Graduate students must finish the thesis proposal under the guidance of the tutor, including the significance of the research, research methods, research ideas, content framework, core ideas, innovation links, work plans and related bibliography and so on. According to the degree of innovation research contents and methods used in the papers, the related disciplines of research at home and abroad to grasp the degree of dynamic, feasible scheme to study the degree, the academic and applied value of the proposed solution and the expected results for making a evaluation. If students don’t pass the thesis demonstration report in the first time, they could be allowed to take part in another report meeting 1-2 months later when they revise their report according to the assessment team. Teachers should pay attention to the potential candidates’ thesis proposal to instruct them to write the "National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation".

(3) Thesis writing

Students should report their process of thesis writing to their tutors and guidance groups regularly, and continuously improve their structure, ideas and opinions under the guidance of their tutors. The graduate students and the tutors should be responsible for the final quality of the thesis. They should strengthen the standard requirements, quality concepts and quality awareness of the paper, and ensure there is sufficient time for writing the thesis. A doctorial graduate should write their final thesis in at least 2 years.

(4)Pre-defense for thesis  

The graduate students who intend to apply for the doctorial degree’s defense of a dissertation must participate in pre-defense process organized by the department. The teachers, tutors and guidance team members of the relevant departments of the college listen to the applicants’ comprehensive report on the progress and achievements of the thesis, put forward suggestions for further revising and improving the dissertations and make sure that the applicants can participate in the defense as scheduled.  

(5)Thesis review and defense

Teachers will implement the process of thesis review and defense strictly, review and defense process has their individual scores. Teachers will improve the monitoring measures of the guidance, review, defense work, eliminate all kinds of academic factors which interfere thesis review and defense work, and ensure the academic level and authority and seriousness of the degree awarding work.
