On May 12th, invited by The National Institute of Schooling Reform and Development, The Department of Education and Department of Curriculum and Instruction, Mr. Huang Xianhua from the Chinese University of Hong Kong came to report and communicate with teachers and students.
The morning report was presided by Prof. Huang Zhongjing, chair of The Department of Education. The chair of The National Institute of Schooling Reform and Development and about 80 teachers and students participated. The report is From Learning Focus to Key Competence which is international common pursuit.
Mr. Huang started with a game of “throw ball” to guide into the understanding of teaching and learning. Based on the analysis of others research, he thought teaching and learning wasn’t controlling and be controlled, but an interaction which like the cooperation between dancers. Teaching and learning also need harmonious steps. Then, Mr. Huang presented the research of key competency from OECD and his own thoughts. In his opinions, except to consider what should be reserve, it is also necessary to know what is neglected. A lot of research focus on the relationship between human and society, human and nature, but overlook human and itself.
Finally, Mr. Huang discussed the relationship of teaching and learning combined with his new book. He thought making student know how to think, learn and like study is the important content of calculation, especially the innovative talents.
Prof. Huang Zhongjing and Prof. Yang Xiaowei made conclusion. They thought the report expand our academic view. Prof. Yang admired the religious attitude of Mr. Huang.
At the afternoon meeting, Mr. Huang Xianhua report four topics: 1, curriculum development and understand; 2, the relationship of curriculum and teaching; 3, the relationship of teaching and learning; 4, the research of curriculum and teaching.
For the first question, Mr. Huang start from “the curriculum development and the curriculum understand are contradiction or complementation”. He discussed the two curriculum patterns based on Tayler and Peine. Then he pointed out contradiction or complementation situation of curriculum in what, how and why.
In the discussion of relationship between curriculum and teaching, Mr. Huang shared his research about two ways in differ the two concepts based on his common sense and literature arrangement. He understands them from institution, region, school, classroom and person to point out that the research of teaching should focus on learner and teacher, and the research of curriculum focus on how curriculum forms and what it molds.
About the relationship of teaching and learning, Mr. Huang discussed the questions about whether the teacher’s teaching and the students’ learning can be divided, it is necessary to be divided and the meaning. He asked whether the teachers’ guidance should base on students’ learning character? He presented the teaching and learning theory around the question.
Finally, about the question of curriculum and teaching research, Mr. Huang took the arrangement of academic paper as an example to point out that a good research just like human body which should pay attention to literature analysis and research design, to cultivate academic quality and rethink the research point is intellectual or advice.
In the three-hour meeting, Mr. Huang answered questions from teachers and students based on his research experience which not only brought the collision of ideas, but also the enlightenment of research attitude.
