At 14:00 on December 7th, a general topic of National Educational Science Plan "Research on the Integration of Chinese Value in International Large-scale Educational Evaluation and the Construction of Chinese Discourse in the Evaluation System" hosted by Yun You who is an Associate Professor of the Department of Education was held at Room 1113, Liberal Arts Building. Professor Zhongjing Huang, chairman of the Department of Education, professor Zhengtao Li, director of the Institute of Schooling Reform and Development, professor Zhengjiang Xia from the Institute of International and Comparative Education of Shanghai Normal University, and Jiuquan Yang, editor-in-chief of the Journal of East China Normal University (Educational Science Edition), attending the meeting, professor Xiaowei Yang, former director of the Institute of Schooling Reform and Development, attended the meeting online. Deputy chairman of the Department of Education, associate professor Lin Li is a member of this research team. Meng Zhang, a doctoral student at the Education University of Hong Kong, also participated in this meeting.

Teacher Yun You introduced the topic mainly from the reasons for the topic selection, key tasks, basic ideas, and expected results.

Since the 1960s, international large-scale education evaluation has gradually emerged. However, the content of international assessments and the analysis of assessment results are largely dominated by the values of western countries. In recent years, the outstanding performance of Chinese students in international assessments has attracted world-wide attention to explore the "secrets of success" in Chinese education. The first key task of this project is to integrate Chinese values in international assessments and then make them more diverse and comprehensive. The second key task is to construct Chinese discourse in the international evaluation system, that is, to explore how to specifically express the Chinese propositions on the evaluation system of education and realize the international contribution of Chinese education research. The basic idea of this project is based on the research logic of "reflection on real problems-exploration of theoretical resources-exploration of improvement methods-application of practical fields-construction of discourse system" to coordinate the entire project. It is hoped that it can explore deeply into Chinese ontology and values, to contribute to the thinking and expression of Chinese pedagogy on "what value should be cherished" and "what qualities should be cultivated and evaluated".

The participating experts spoke highly of the project, affirmed the research value and overall thinking of the project, and made detailed suggestions on the project's research objects and research methods.

Professor Zhengjiang Xia affirmed the value of the subject and gave instructive suggestions on the research object, premise and other content. He proposed that international large-scale evaluations that really involve values and Western discourse systems are not limited to TIMSS and PISA, and that more evaluations involving civic literacy and social emotions can be explored to increase the diversity and applicability of research objects.

Editor-in-chief Jiuquan Yang proposed that the research on this project needs to correctly handle the relationship between Eastern and Western countries. In the field of education, especially for student learning, different historical and cultural contexts can help us explain the performance of students from different cultural backgrounds and help us improve teaching. However, different interpretations do not mean that there is right or wrong. Value should be turned into an academic discourse, and this concept should be neutralized to ensure the fairness of research.

From the perspective of modernity reflection, Professor Xiaowei Yang provides a thinking path to find the current meaning from Chinese history and culture, and emphasizes the excavation of Chinese traditional values that are in line with the modern sustainable development process. At the same time, in terms of research objects, the research also needs to further explain the concept of “value” in the “measurement value system”.

Associate Professor Lin Li proposed that China has a long tradition of selecting candidates from examinations. However, the goals and orientations of the current large-scale evaluations have changed. Therefore, the East and the West should look at each other on the basis of reconciliation. In addition, he also suggested that an international academic salon should be established in the research process to promote exchanges between Eastern and Western scholars, promote the results of the project and expand the academic influence of the research.

Professor Zhengtao Li believes that the key of the project is the relationship between Chinese and Western values, and the premise of value integration is a deep understanding of the differences, connections and conflicts between Chinese and Western values. This is also a major difficulty of the project. Another difficulty lies in the transformation of the value system into discourse. This process also requires a lot of work. Based on the above two major difficulties, he also put forward four highly targeted detailed suggestions.

Finally, Professor Zhongjing Huang, the chairman of the discussion forum, made a concluding speech. He first congratulated Associate Professor You Yun, and based on the comments of the above-mentioned experts, comprehensively refined three improvement suggestions around the research objects and research methods, and pointed out the direction for the further improvement and advancement of the research.

Teacher You gave a brief response to the questions and suggestions raised by the experts, and expressed gratitude to the experts who attended the demonstration meeting. Everyone agrees that although the research on this subject is difficult, the value and significance of the research on the subject are great. The subject research team has a reasonable professional composition, a solid research foundation, and a reasonable and feasible research design, which can contribute to expanding the international influence of Chinese pedagogy research.
