Professor Dietrich Benner invited by the Department of Education to give a report

At 13:30 p.m. on November 6, 2019, the Department of education invited Dietrich Benner, a lifelong professor of the school of Education Science at Humboldt University in Berlin, to make a report entitled “the progress of my ‘general pedagogy ’ in the debate with its critics". The report was presided over by Professor Huang Zhongjingand more than 30 teachers and students from different departments attended the report.

In this lecture, Professor Dietrich Benner launched from three aspects: the basic idea of general pedagogy, criticism on different directions of general pedagogy, and the development of general pedagogy.


From the perspective of human practice, Professor Dietrich Benner discussed the logic of educational practice , which is the principle of plasticity, the principle of initiative, the principle of educational transformation and the principle of non hierarchical order of human practice. From the perspective of action theory, he discussed the theory of education, the theory of enlightenment and the theory of educational institutions, and distinguished three specific ways of educational action: management, teaching and intergenerational action. At the same time, he summaried several basic forms of educational action, which are the management education, the teaching education, the consulting education, and the moral education.

Professor Benner treated the criticism of general pedagogy dialectically, reflected and responded to the controversial issues. He clarified the history of the basic concepts "plasticity" and "requirements for self activities" from Platon's "Allegory of the Cave". So he explained that the distinction between "education" and "enlightenment" is not only limited to Germany, but also applicable to other countries. He further explained that it is indispensable for individual to experience three kinds of causal and negative process. He also emphasized the relationship between education and ability and it is significant to the educational practice of management, teaching and consultation.

Professor Peng Zhengmei commented on this report. He thought general pedagogy embodies that education is an open system, it demonstrates the unity of teaching and learning, ability and method. Meanwhile, the principle of educational thinking and action have a profound impact on the pre-modern, post-modern and modern education.

Professor Huang Zhongjing summarized that Professor Dietrich Benner's report had a strict logic system, showed his self reflection. Professor Dietrich Benner explained the concepts of "education", "enlightenment" and "learning", which made the teachers and students on site gain a lot.
